What I offer to do for you:I don't just tell you what needs to be done. I do the technical work for you. I edit in Microsoft Word with "track changes" on so that you can see what I have done and you can accept or reject each change. I can also comment and tell you why I made each change, but I charge double for that. It slows me down considerably.
I am a copy editor and a line editor. This means that I:
Fix grammar, spelling, punctuation, and word usage.
Address changes in verb tense (which are sometimes needed).
Correct paragraphing issues.
Generally improve the flow of meaning so that the reader sees your story and not the words:
Rewrite awkward sentences.
Clarify which meaning you want if something can be read more than one way.
Suggest another word for one used too often.
Suggest fixes for wordiness and repetition.
Suggest ways you might vary sentence structure and paragraph structure.
Your Book Needs More Than My One Pass
After you accept or reject a copy editor's changes, have someone proofread your book, especially if you add or change anything.
Before you send your story to a copy editor, have it read by at least one beta reader, someone who will tell you the truth and who likes your genre. Beta readers can tell you if there are boring parts or confusing parts, if the story is too slow, or if they don't care enough about the characters. Fix these things before you get a copy edit.
Get your book formatted after it has been proofread and you have fixed all the errors that were found and you have removed all the comments.
TimeI do one pass through an average of 10,000 words per day, five days a week.
