This horse is Mom's favorite pet, El Dine, her three year old Arabian mare. This is yet another snapshot she took with her iPhone 3! I love how it captured a clean shadow and clear hairs on the tail of a moving horse. I have camera envy!
I lost a pound yesterday! Woo Hoo! Better yet, I did so without really trying too hard. I had a migraine headache, so my stomach was threatening to revolt. I couldn't just eat my usual burrito and salsa for lunch. It sounded too, uh, revolting.
I walked Oreo a mile in the rain. Here is what I ate and lost a pound without trying too hard!
Special K with Berries and organic vanilla soy milk
Two slices of wheat toast with a tablespoon of chunky peanut butter on each, raw baby carrots
Quarter pound of fried hamburger (grease squeezed out on a paper towel), 2 tablespoons BBQ sauce, raw baby carrots
1 small York peppermint pattie
3 Tootsie Pop suckers

Deer Tracks in Snow Spokane

The deer pass through our park and through the vacant lot next to our rented house all year long, but most of the time their droppings are the only sign I notice. We see the actual deer sometimes, too, mostly through the windows. In spring they like to eat the dandelions out of our lawn, which they are more than welcome to!

I walked my mile in the snow yesterday, with Oreo. Here is what I ate and lost exactly a pound:
Special K and organic soy milk with blueberries
Leftover baked chicken, carrots and onion
Salmon patty with Robert Rothschild's Pineapple Habanero Sauce and steamed broccoli, cauliflower and carrots
1 strawberry flavored Blowpop candy
P.S. Yes, I am still off diet soda!
147.8 Lost a Pound Without Trying
I lost a pound yesterday, without even trying. My new lifestyle is working. It is maintaining my weight for me, with really little effort on my part. And no drugs. I barely even take Tylenol any more.
So, what is this new lifestyle? An active one. I go outside and walk as fast as I can for at least 20 minutes every day, come rain, shine, snow or hail. I actually like walking on the cool overcast days the best. I don't mind the rain. I have a raincoat and waterproof boots.
In addition to walking, I do all my own housework. Yes, housework is exercise. We used to belong to a country club, but I actually get more exercise now. They published my 'housecleaning as exercise' story on Yahoo! Finance. I get a little kickback if you read it there.
Yesterday, I walked each dog for 15 minutes, for a total of 30 minutes of brisk walking. I cut weeds by hand, out in this yard you see me pictured in. I also shopped at Wal-mart, which is some walking, too, especially because I always park as far away from the front of the store as I need to in order to avoid all those fender benders that try to happen near the entrance. In addition, I did laundry, which means going up and down the basement stairs, and generally scrubbed, picked up, and straightened. I often forget to mention here the exercise I get from housework and yardwork.
Exercise is most of the secret to my weight loss. New eating habits are part of it, too.
Cookies are only for Christmas. Cake and ice cream are only for birthdays. I think I'm going to dub the 4th of July for pie. :) The point is, I don't keep cookies, cake, or ice cream in the house for everyday consumption. Instead, I eat fruit when I want a treat (OK, and a little candy). Lately, I have been on an apple kick. Before that, it was blueberries. Strawberries had their turn, as well. I have a little chocolate or peanut butter or Special K with my fruit, to dress it up. But the fruit is the main treat. The other things just jazz it up a bit. Here is what I ate yesterday:
Sliced Fuji apple candied with 4 tablespoons chunky peanut butter and 36 dark chocolate chips
4 mini York peppermint patties
2 slices of Costco combo pizza
Half a can of Amy's organic lentil soup over steamed broccoli (yum!)

145.6 Yay, A Four Day Weekend!
I received 20 free samples in the mail yesterday from Lipton. I tried their new instant mango pineapple "Tea & Honey." It tasted good. There is a slight aspartame aftertaste, but if you are used to that from diet soda, then you won't notice it.
Aspartame diet drinks helped me lose the 90 pounds. Aspartame is considered a dangerous substance by some, but to me, for a few months, to lose a lot of weight, it was worth the risks.
Now that I've lost the weight and am on keep trim eating, I am trying to wean myself from needing any flavor in my water. They sent me about 20 packets of this stuff. I plan to enjoy every last one, but I am not sure if I will use any of the 50 cents off coupons they sent and buy any after the samples are gone.
How do I get all these free samples, you ask?
Good question. :) I get free samples as Klout perks. Klout is a service that connects ordinary people to products that want authentic advertising. To get the perks, which are free products ranging from ice tea mix to snow boards to hotel stays in exotic locations to all kinds of crazy cool stuff, you share products on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, your blog, and wherever else you hang out online. Easy!
Yeah, Klout perks are great! Pretty awesome tip, huh? All I ask in return is that you circle me on Google+. Easy, right? And you'll be helping me gain Klout! ;) See? That's how you do it! And while you're on my Google+ profile, just Google "Klout the standard for influence" to read more about it, and then go to klout.com and join! :)
Today is a make up snow day for the kids at school. There is no school today and no school Monday for Memorial Day. Yay! I get a four day weekend!
I substituted yesterday for a teacher who had algebra class in the morning and PE in the afternoon. What an odd combination! It was fun taking the kids outside to play softball, though.

I walked with the kids during their 12 minute warm-up and I walked them out to their field. Scott and I walked a mile with the dogs when I got home, too.
There were cupcakes in the teacher's lounge again, and I succumbed. It didn't seem to hurt me any. I lost a pound yesterday. Here is what I ate:
Small bowl of Special K, strawberries and organic soy milk
Banquet Sweet and Sour Chicken frozen dinner 8 oz
Small vanilla cupcake with butter cream frosting (teacher's lounge)
Bean and cheese burrito with salsa
Two Fuji apples each with two tablespoons peanut butter and 24 chocolate chips
144.4 Before and After Losing 90 Pounds
Scott took the top picture at Dunkin Donuts in July of 2011. I took the bottom picture with a timer a few days ago, at my goal weight of under 150. In the top picture I weighed about 220. I had already lost 20 pounds and I thought I was done, until I saw this picture. Ugh! How different fat makes our faces! But that is not the only difference between before and after losing 90 pounds.
Before: My ankles hurt all the time. I couldn't get through a trip to Walmart or Costco without having to find a place to sit down.
After: I am going to walk 5 miles home from work today, and my biggest concern is boredom!
--------------------
Before: I had to buy whatever the store had that fit my size 20 body. Most size 20 clothes are ugly.
After: I have to keep telling myself not to buy all the size 8 clothes in the store, just because they all fit me.
--------------------
Before: I got a headache almost every day. Mom said it was probably high blood pressure.
After: I have had exactly one headache in the last 6 months.
--------------------
I read a Facebook post that showed pictures of the same woman supposedly at size 8, size 12 and size 16. The post said we women try too hard to lose weight and that most men prefer the way we look at size 12. Size 12 was my original goal, as you can tell by the name of my blog.
You know what, though? It's not about the weight men like me at. It's about the weight I feel best at. Staying at a size 8 keeps my ankles from hurting and keeps the headaches away. Size 8 is recommended on all the body mass index charts. Before I lost 90 pounds, size 12 sounded good. After losing 90 pounds and feeling so much better, there is no way I am going back to size 12!
Here is what I ate yesterday and lost a pound on a no-exercise Sunday:
Small bowl of Special K, strawberries and organic soy milk
Handful of raw carrot sticks
1 iced sugar cookie, three peanut butter cookies, 5 pineapple chunks and 4 grapes at church coffee hour
A cup of Healthy Choice chicken and rice soup
Hamburger patty, 1 tablespoon of BBQ sauce, steamed broccoli

144.4 Strength Training

Two vicious pitbull dogs were loose in the park yesterday. They attacked my dog on his leash. I firmly told all three dogs, "NO!" That did break up the fight momentarily. A neighbor firmly told the pitbulls, "Go home," but they continued to follow me from 50 feet away or so. I was on the phone (hands free) with my husband and so he heard what was going on and he came to the park with our other dog and a stick. When we met half way he told me the pitbulls were no longer following me. I went the rest of the way home anyway. The upshot of the pitbull incident was I only walked a mile and a third, instead of the usual two miles.
I did some strength training yesterday, as you can see in this picture. Walking my dog is great cardiovascular exercise (what we used to call aerobic exercise). It also strengthens the muscles in my lower body and in my left arm, which holds the leash. My husband explained to me that my right arm and the rest of my upper body need strength training, too. Stronger muscles burn more calories, speed up my metabolism and improve my body mass index. So, I work out a little every day on our Total Gym. Mom, I was trying to explain this to you before. I hope this picture makes it more clear how these exercises work.
The Total Gym uses my body weight as resistance. The platform I sit on moves up and down on the poles. In this picture, I have just pulled my platform up to the top of the poles. When I weighed 240, I had to have the poles slanted a lot less, so that I was almost moving parallel to the floor. A few months ago, I slanted the poles more to increase the resistance. Scott got our Total Gym a few years ago for $100 through a classified ad.
Here is what I ate yesterday and lost a pound, along with walking 20 minutes:
Small bowl of Special K, strawberries and organic soy milk
Small bowl of strawberries and organic soy milk
1 slice of bacon
3 Eggs scrambled in bacon grease with onion sauteed in bacon grease
Baked chicken, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and onion
Small bowl of cheddar cheese flavored popcorn
147.8 Shorts and Bacon!
We walked the dogs 2 miles round trip to the post office yesterday to mail in our taxes. All I could think was, "I wish it were summer so we didn't have to bundle up so much!" It was much more fun walking around town than walking round the park. Now that the ice is melted, we have decided to go exploring on our walks.
This morning's weigh-in at 147.8 verifies that yesterday's high weigh-in was because my bowels were full. Still, I am going to drop a few more pounds so that no matter what, I will weigh in below 150.
Here is what I ate yesterday and lost a pound, along with walking 2 miles:
Small bowl of Special K, blueberries and vanilla soy milk
2 slices of bacon
3 Eggs scrambled in bacon grease with onions, mushrooms and red bell pepper
Leftover baked chicken, onion and carrots
If you're panicking because I am eating bacon, then read this declaration by heart surgeon Dr. Dwight Lundell. He says animal fats are healthy and it is processed vegetable fats we should limit in our diets. Here is a quote that summarizes his main points:
"Simply stated, without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol would accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes... What are the biggest culprits of chronic inflammation? Quite simply, they are the overload of simple, highly processed carbohydrates (sugar, flour and all the products made from them) and the excess consumption of omega-6 vegetable oils like soybean, corn and sunflower that are found in many processed foods."
156.2 I lost my pound yesterday!
We practiced our shooting yesterday on milk jugs filled with water, out here in Bureau of Land Management territory. I hit a jug dead center on my first shot, and then missed on the whole rest of my clip. Scott took this picture of me as I was untangling my hair from all the head wear, even though it had been in a pony tail.
I walked up and down those hills I don't know how many times, carrying jugs of water half the time. After we were done shooting, we brought the dogs in there and collected brass bullet shells and aluminum cans for some recycling money. I wish I had worn my pedometer, but then again this was up and down hills, so it would not have done my exercise justice.
I wore my new red men's size medium snow pants because the wind was up and it was FREEZING! Not literally, but 48 degrees can feel like freezing when there is an icy wind. I have the red coat to match these red pants. Aren't they hot? They make me feel like a hockey player. They make my hips disappear, so when I'm all bundled up you can't even tell I'm a girl.
It felt warmer inside the canyon with the sun on us, downright comfy in fact. Shooting will be easier in summer when we don't need to bring all this cold weather gear.
Added months later: Here are links to some more days when I lost a pound or more on my diet:

159.8 Keep Trim Day 1 of 13
I confess I don't really measure my breakfast portions with cups. I have reduced my breakfast down to one handful of Special K topped with three culled palmfuls of blueberries and enough soy milk to moisten the cereal, as in the photo to the left. When I was using the larger cereal bowl it had grown to almost twice this much, and I was not losing weight as quickly.
By culled palm-fulls of blueberries, I mean I scoop up just enough blueberries that I can examine them for spoiled ones and stems while they sit in my palm. Isn't the bowl cute? My sister's friend made them several years ago and my sister gave me two for Christmas.
I shopped at The Salvation Army Thrift Store yesterday. Guess what? I am now a tight size 10! I bought two pairs of warm size 10 corduroy pants. I have been wearing size 12 black corduroys lately, so I was glad that the two pairs out of 30 that I tried on that fit me best were a rust color and a fawn color. I will continue to wear the size 12 clothes until the 10s are a little more comfortable. I just wanted to have the size 10 corduroys on hand for when that happens! The fawn pair are actually a men's size 32 x 32.
Here is what I ate yesterday and lost a pound along with walking two miles in the morning:
Small bowl of Special K, blueberries and soy milk
Salmon patty, steamed broccoli and cauliflower
Baked chicken, onion and carrots

A Note on Blueberries and Dieting
The Scarsdale Medical Diet includes lunch any day you want of fruit salad with half a cup of non-fat cottage cheese and six walnut halves. I have read many comments from sad dieters who say this lunch ruined their weight loss for any day they had it.
My advice is to stick to berries as your fruit when on the diet, and to go easy on the other fruits when on keep trim eating. I say go easy, but don't give up fruit. It is very good for you and can work on keep trim eating. I ate two sliced apples candied with two tablespoons of peanut butter and a handful of semi sweet chocolate chips for lunch yesterday and still lost half a pound on keep trim eating.

169.0 Keep Trim Day 11

He wants us to call him if we have a birthday and want a cake decorated. I won't be doing that, but here is my free advertisement for his work. It is beautiful! Reminds me of Peeta from "The Hunger Games" series of books by Suzanne Collins.
Maybe fighting off this cold helped me lose my pound yesterday. I sure didn't consciously fight very hard. I fell asleep at 6pm, woke up for an hour at midnight, and then slept till 7 am!
Up until I fell asleep, I was having lots of fun making my new Amazon Kindle Keyboard 3G read to me! It read Ezekiel 29 to me and then most of Jane Austen's novel, "Persuasion."
At first I sampled one of the Audible Books, because I read they have better inflection. I much prefer the normal books that have "text-to-speech" enabled. That way, I can read the words myself as the Kindle reads them aloud. With the Audible books, the words do not appear on the screen. I find I comprehend better if I both hear and see the words, especially while reading my Bible. I paid $6 for the electronic Bible I loaded on my Kindle. All of Jane Austen's novels have passed out of copyright and are free. (Author's life plus 75 years)
Here is all the junk I ate yesterday and still lost a pound through Christmas magic, even without walking:
Small bowl of Special K, strawberries and organic soy milk, black unsweetened coffee
1 brown sugar cinnamon Pop Tart
4 frosted sugar Christmas cookies
1 can Campbell's Healthy Request Chunky Old Fashioned Beef Soup (1 can = 2 servings)
Another brown sugar cinnamon Pop Tart
Leftover baked chicken, onions and carrots, caffeine-free tea
2 more frosted sugar Christmas cookies
181.8 Diet Day 5 of 14
Today I weigh 181.8, which means I lost a pound yesterday, yay! I have a cold and it was 29 outside yesterday, so I didn't walk my mile. I did put in a few minutes here and there on our stair step exercise machine, though. I amused Scott by turning around on it and walking "down" after I had walked "up" the stairs for a few minutes. Walking "down" on a stair stepper uses different muscles than walking "up" uses.
My ankles are no longer swollen. Did I say that before? It is so wonderful to have thin attractive ankles once again, where I can see the little ankle bone on the outside. For the longest time my ankles were so swollen I didn't dare wear skirts or dresses. Losing 58 pounds has really helped with the swelling. I also can see my knees once again. They also used to be swallowed up, but just in fat, especially when I bent them. I still have a double chin, but it is much smaller than it was. My cheeks are smaller, too.
And of course in addition to looking better, I feel so much better I cannot even express it. Little aches and pains that I had in my ankles and my lower back are just gone. I have a headache right now because I have congestion with my cold, but for the most part my headaches are a thing of the past as well.
Here is what I ate yesterday and lost a pound, even without walking a mile:
Small bowl of Special K, strawberries and organic soy milk
Baked chicken, onion and mushrooms, 1 cup steamed broccoli
58 pounds lost and 37 more to go till I reach my goal of 145.
Day 10 of 14 Keep Trim Eating
My weight today is 185.4. I lost 1.2 pounds yesterday, taking it easy because I had gained .8 pounds the day before. I did walk my mile yesterday. Here is what I ate:
Small bowl of Special K and soy milk, black unsweetened coffee
Half a dinner plate of pizza, three bites of steamed butternut squash, Diet Coke
Half a dinner plate of mushrooms sauteed in the barest spray of Pam and sprinkled with no-salt seasoning, half a dinner plate of ham steak fried in the mushroom juice, caffeine-free diet soda
.6 ounce Almond Joy
I was really surprised to discover I didn't like the butternut squash. Scott didn't like it, either, and we threw it all out. I had cut up all the mushrooms for my usual veggie scrambled eggs recipe. I wanted some ham, though, not eggs. This was the first time I had eaten sauteed mushrooms on their own, without the flavor of onions. The ham made the mushrooms taste good.

187.8 Lost a Pound
I weigh 187.8 today. I lost a pound yesterday. I walked half a mile. Exercise is an ingredient in my weight loss, but diet is the key ingredient. I am now fully into ketosis again, which is why I am losing a pound a day once again. I am scheduled to stay in ketosis until this coming Friday, which will end my two weeks on the diet. Dr Tarnower clearly and adamantly says not to stay on the diet for more than two weeks.
I do know people who live their entire lives in ketosis. They have type two diabetes, and ketosis controls it. They eat almost no carbohydrates, getting all their calories from protein and fat. I joined their Facebook group, thinking that I was on a low carbohydrate diet, too. Um, no. My diet is low carb but it is also low fat. I did not fit in well with these folks!
Here is what I ate yesterday and still managed to lose a pound:
Winter breakfast: 1 cup Special K with dried berries in it, 1 cup soy milk, black unsweetened coffee
Lunch: 1 cup raw carrot sticks dipped in half a cup of parmesan/spinach/artichoke dip, Diet Coke
New Dinner: three deviled eggs made with just mustard and relish no mayo, 1 cup steamed broccoli, caffeine-free diet soda

Scarsdale Diet Keep Trim Plate Chart

These plate percentage diagrams represent how I see the Scarsdale Medical Diet, in my head. The keep trim plate chart I have posted today is how I am eating now. This is how I am keeping the weight off.
I lead a pretty sedentary life. My dogs remind me to walk a mile a day, but that is all the exercise I get. If you get more exercise, then you can eat more fruit, fat, and grains.
5% Fat
Any kind of non-skim milk product is mostly fat: cheese, butter, cream in your coffee, sour cream, ice cream, cheesecake... Non-skim yogurt and cottage cheese are mostly fat. Make mine a skinny latte!
Oil is also a fat, like in Italian salad dressing. Most creamy salad dressings, such as ranch dressing, are all fat. If they aren't, then they are sugar, which counts against the fruit allowance.
Of course, any fat you leave on your meat counts toward the 5% fat allowance as well.
10% Grains
Grains are cereal, bread, tortillas, pancakes, crepes, injera, rice, cakes, cookies, and noodles or pastas like spaghetti, macaroni, and lasagna. Whole grains have more fiber, vitamins, and minerals, but they still need to be limited to 10% of your daily intake, if you want to keep trim and you're a couch potato like me.
10% Fruit / Sugar / Starch
Fresh fruit is best, with fiber and vitamins. The canned stuff is full of sodium* and sugar.
You can indulge in dessert so long as it is no more than 10% of your meal. I love Costco's cherry-almond-dark-chocolate clusters... Whatever sugar you eat counts toward this 10% fruit allowance. Fat-free salad dressings are full of sugar, as are most sauces: BBQ sauce, ketchup, honey mustard...
Starch is found in potatoes, corn, peas, and non-whole grains. We allowed for the starch in grains in the 10% grain allowance, but keep in mind that corn, potatoes, and peas count toward the fruit / starch / sugar allowance, not as vegetables.
25% Protein
Protein can be beef, pork, chicken, fish, eggs, beans, nuts, tofu... Beans and nuts have lots of fat in them, though. Watch out for processed meats such as sausage and lunch meat. They are full of sodium*. So are frozen dinners, canned food, and fast food meals, full of sodium*.
Non-fat milk products, also called skim milk products, count as protein, too: cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese. Be aware that many yogurts have lots of sugar in them, though.
50% Vegetables or Salad
Vegetables are plants: lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cucumbers... I like raw baby carrots as finger foods with lunch, and steamed broccoli, cauliflower, or Brussels sprouts with my dinner.
Starchy vegetables count toward sugar instead: potatoes, corn, peas.
*Limit Sodium / Salt
Salt, or sodium as it is listed on food labels, makes your body need more water, so you gain water weight. If you have not been limiting your sodium, then you can lose an easy twenty pounds in two weeks by just not eating any salt / sodium and letting go of all that water. Try it if you don't believe me.
Tomorrow I will post the plate chart of how I eat on actual Scarsdale Diet days.

I
walked my mile yesterday, which may matter even more than what I ate.
Here is what I ate yesterday, though, and still managed to lose a pound:
Breakfast: Small bowl of Special K, diced strawberries and organic soy milk with black unsweetened coffee
Breakfast: Small bowl of Special K, diced strawberries and organic soy milk with black unsweetened coffee
Lunch: 6 ounces of Kirkland beef lasagna (from the frozen food section at Costco), 1 cup microwaved broccoli, 1 can of Diet Coke
Dinner: 1 bean-and-cheese burrito with 3 tablespoons of chunky salsa, 20 ounces of Wal-mart Sparkling Strawberry LemonadeI lost a pound yesterday while eating a somewhat normal diet. I did watch my portions. I have noticed that I tend to eat twice as much as a normal portion of any food that I really like. I have started to pay attention to the portion amounts on the packages.
Thank you for asking if I drink enough water and if I am taking in too much caffeine. I do take a break from the caffeine. I don't have any after 2pm, or I can't sleep that night. I do drink water between meals. There is a water fountain in the park where we take our walks. Come winter they turn it off or it would freeze, so in winter we do carry a water bottle on our walks.
Keep Trim with Exercise for the Win!
My weight: 196! I lost a pound yesterday, and it was mostly because I walked a mile and a third. I must have lost that extra pound I gained the two days right before yesterday because I was not exercising enough. Thank you, Mom, for encouraging me to lose as much weight as I can while I am young and can still exercise. I can see where this would be nearly impossible for the handicapped.
When I go on my walks, I take my dog. He keeps me moving at a fast pace. He also gives my arms a workout because he pulls on them in his excitement to be 50 feet ahead of where we are. We walk the whole mile without stopping for longer than it takes him to relieve himself -- 10 or 20 times. Scott and I bought rain coats and snow coats and waterproof boots, so we can go on our walk no matter what the weather looks like.
We usually walk in the park that is a block from where we live. It is a large park and three times around its perimeter is a mile. The park is fenced and grassy. It is open from sunrise until 10 pm. I have no idea why I look like I am making gang signs in this picture. I'm not. Honest. But see how nice our local park is?
OK, here is what I ate yesterday that got burned off and then some by walking four times around our park, or a mile and a third - and lost a pound:
Small bowl of Special K, cut-up strawberries and organic soy milk, three cups of coffee, black and unsweetened
Lunch of 6 ounces of Costco lasagna with meat sauce (from the freezer section), 1 cup broccoli microwaved two minutes and two cans of Diet Coke
Dinner of 1 broiled cheeseburger on the bun with 1 tablespoon of BBQ sauce, 2 cups cooked carrot sticks with salt and 20 ounces Walmart Sparkling Strawberry Lemonade
Thank you for asking me yesterday about if I am counting calories. I'm not. The Scarsdale Medical Diet is about food groups and portion control, rather than calorie counting. I have been using it off and on since 1979, but obviously not as often as I should. I have learned over the years that it is mostly a matter of eating lean protein sources and vegetables, with a little fruit thrown in, during the weight loss periods. During the keep trim periods I can add a little bit of pasta and bread, but not much at all. Dr Tarnower explicitly says to avoid juices and all sugary drinks at all times. He suggests that we satisfy our sweet tooth with diet soda. I am confident he would still be around today if he hadn't been murdered in the early 1980s.

199 I lost a pound yesterday!

Weight: 199 I lost a pound yesterday! This is the first time since at least 2005 that I have weighed in at less than 200 pounds!
We did go to the county fair yesterday. We had a great time, and I didn't cheat on my diet! I made the fair about seeing the shows, demonstrations and exhibits, rather than about the food.
The coolest thing we saw was a blacksmithing demonstration. Blacksmith Steve McGrew made a corkscrew right in front of our eyes. It only took about 20 minutes.
The next best show we saw was called mutton busting. It was nerve-wracking to watch. Kids of 3, 4, 5 and 6 years of age rode sheep for as long as they could. We also saw antique tractors, grain grinding, can crushing, 4-H projects, rope-making, juggling, and fat belly dancers.

What I ate yesterday and lost a pound:
My usual breakfast: Special K, organic soy milk and cut-up strawberries -- with three cups of coffee, black and unsweetened
For lunch we split this Chinese-food booth entree called Sesame Chicken (See Photo Above). We each ate half the chicken and I picked the broccoli, cabbage and carrots out of the chow mein.
I also ate a handful of raw carrot-sticks that I had brought, as a snack. I drank 20 oz of Diet Pepsi and lots of water.

Dinner was 7 Kirkland beef meatballs with no sauce and a large cucumber, cut up and topped with 2 tablespoons of Bernstein's Restaurant Style Italian salad dressing. I drank 10 oz of Walmart Sparkling Lemonade mixed with 10 oz of Walmart Sparkling Cherry Limeade.
Will the Fair Ruin My Diet?
Weight: 200 I lost a pound again yesterday! Yay! Nothing really significant happened. At first Scott wanted to go to the county fair, but he decided he would rather go tomorrow, Wednesday, so that we can go for a few hours in the morning, come home and walk the dogs and eat lunch, and then return in the evening.
On one hand, I am a bit concerned that I will be tempted to cheat on my diet at the fair. I don't like cotton candy or hot dogs, but I am partial to pies. On the other hand, I am likely to walk at least two miles while we are there. Probably more like 5 miles, so that should help.
If I do cheat at the fair, at least it will be inside my rules of only cheating away from home and only doing a planned cheat on my diet. Those rules have protected me pretty well except when we went on vacation for most of the month of August, I gained 5 pounds.
*I know, I know, I did say months ago that I was giving up Diet Coke. I quickly gained ten pounds after I said that, though. So the Diet Coke is back, but I make myself quit all caffeine intake at 2pm so I can fall asleep easily at 10pm.
Edited May 23, 2012:
Yay! They have habanero sauce at Costco again! I bought a bottle yesterday. Here is a picture, at last! It is not particularly spicy. It is a little spicy, I guess, but mostly it is just tasty! You have to like pineapple to like it. Sometimes they let you sample it at Costco, which is how I got hooked on it. I love these meatballs with habanero sauce even better than with spaghetti and tomato sauce. Yum, this sauce is good! Stay to small amounts, though. A serving is two tablespoons, and that is 70 calories.
If I had to lose 90 pounds all over again, I would not use this as a diet meal. These meatballs are actually quite full of calories. But, I am leaving this here because this is how I did start my diet. I probably wouldn't have started it without something so tasty to eat. Who knows?

But yesterday I lost a pound! We walked a mile. I ate:
A lunch of seven Kirkland beef meatballs with 2 tablespoons of Robert Rothschild Farms roasted pineapple habanero sauce (comes in a bottle at Costco in the spring and summer only, really yummy on meat, kind of Hawaiian) and one small ear of corn on the cob, raw. Two cans of Diet Coke.*
Dinner was seven more Kirkland beef meatballs with habanero sauce and two cups of cooked carrots with nothing on them, not even salt. I had 20 ounces of Wal-mart Sparkling Cherry Limeade with dinner.

Yay Walmart Calorie-Free Sparkling Lemonade!

Walmart's all-natural and calorie-free sparkling beverages were Godsends for me while I lost 90 pounds and went from a size 20 to a size 8. I crave sweet stuff after dinner, and these did the trick while I was dieting. They don't have any caffeine, so I could drink them right up until bedtime. My favorite flavor is Walmart sparkling blueberry lemonade. They also sell plain sparkling lemonade, sparkling strawberry lemonade and sparkling cherry limeade.
They used to be just 58 cents for a two-liter bottle, but it has gone up to 85 cents for 2 liters.
Most of the time, they are in the candy aisle, which is really mean of Walmart! When the candy aisle is full of extra stock for holidays, the sparkling lemonades are sometimes in a black stand at the end of the cookie aisle. Other times, Wal-mart shelves its all natural calorie-free sparkling lemonade with the bottled water, which in the store near me is down by the dairy case.
I have not seen any of the sparkling blueberry lemonade flavor here in Spokane. We only saw it on our trip through New York, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota and North Dakota. One of you nice readers asked a manager about it, and we found out Walmart only stocks calorie-free sparkling lemonade during warm weather. Here in Spokane, that is only in summer. Other places, it might include spring and fall.

Weight: 201 I cheated a little more than I thought I should, but I still lost a pound for the day! I thank Wal-mart Calorie-Free Sparkling Lemonade. More on that later. Our new church had donuts out when we got there. I am proud to say I limited myself to one bite of my husband's maple bar. They also had a potluck lunch after the service.
Yesterday's pound loss may have been just water weight from the salty broiled chicken I bought for our Labor Day picnic and just finished off on Friday. It was one of those chickens they have in the little warming stands in the supermarkets. This one came from Wal-mart, but I have seen them at Costco, Safeway and most of the supermarket chains. I stayed at 203 all week and finally was 202 yesterday.
Yesterday I ate:
Small bowl of Special K, strawberries and vanilla soy milk
1 bite of a maple bar
half a dinner plate of tossed salad with
2 tablespoons of low-fat Italian dressing
2 deviled eggs
1/2 cup of spaghetti with sauce and meat pieces
1 cup of corn bread
2 bites of lemon cake with frosting
7 Kirkland Italian-style Beef Meatballs, microwaved, excess fat paper-toweled off
2 tablespoons of Robert Rothschild Farm Roasted Pineapple & Habanero Sauce, added to the cooked meatballs
1 cup of steamed broccoli, nothing added
Update:
I have taken to drinking just water or unsweetened herb tea in the evenings. My favorite caffeine-free tea is Good Earth Tea in the Original Sweet and Spicy flavor. It is basically cinnamon tea with some cloves and nutmeg. Wal-mart also has sodium free diet soda in the flavored water section. My favorite flavor is peach. Sodium makes me retain water weight, so I have become much more aware of the sodium in everything I put in my body.
Update:
I have been completely off diet soda since Jan 8, 2013. I have become convinced that diet soda is unhealthy. However, it really did help combat my sweet tooth while I lost those 90 pounds. Today, I drink mostly plain tap water.
